OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Pangolin protection and buffer fence around the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is complete! Well done to all involved, what a privilege to partner with an incredible reserve to make a difference. Have a read below on the statement by our partners, the SSNR.
We are excited to announce that pangolin protection fence along Sabi Sand Nature Reserve’s entire boundary is complete. The project was initiated towards the end of 2023 with the aim of further protecting our pangolin population by preventing pangolins from being electrocuted by the ground level wires of our boundary fence. Fence electrocutions account for up to 2 000 pangolin deaths in southern Africa annually, making it one of the primary threats to the survival of the Temminck’s ground pangolin. The fence was designed to not only reduce the number of pangolin electrocutions, but also to help save various other wildlife species from getting caught in the electrified fence. We’ve witnessed how this fence has saved several animals from being electrocuted over the course of the year, including pangolins, savanna monitors, tortoises, terrapins, rock pythons and genets, to name a few.
This was a project which required a huge amount of fine planning, dedication and teamwork from everyone involved – we’d like to say a special thanks to all those who helped make this happen. Thank you to our partners on this project, Conserv Earth, for their great contribution towards this project and for their ongoing support in the conservation world. Thank you to Inyati Game Lodge and Ulusaba Private Game Reserve for their awesome contributions towards the SSNR pangolin project, we appreciate all your effort and input towards pangolin conservation. To the Fencing Company who supplied all the fencing materials for this project – thank you for your professionalism and for always being willing to help. Lastly, thank you to the Bio-Diversitree team who worked hard to erect over 33km of the pangolin fence in under three months and provided a high-quality product. We greatly appreciate all the support and assistance from all those who contributed to the completion of this special conservation project.
